The National Library of Scotland, in partnership with Film Hub Scotland premiered Her Century – a curated collection of archive film about women in 20th-century Scotland – on Monday 20 July via the NLS YouTube channel. Now, it is available to view online until 20 September via the link above.
Her Century toured cinemas throughout the country from September 2019, coordinated by Shona Thomson (A Kind of Seeing) and was scheduled to be the main attraction at the Library’s George IV Bridge building over the summer as part of a special exhibition.
Featuring work from Scottish female filmmakers including Sarah Erulkar, Brigid ‘Budge’ Cooper and Jenny Gilbertson, these rarely-seen films follow women’s histories through 100 years of filmmaking in Scotland.
These films were screened together for the first time on the Her Century tour, which travelled to venues, cinemas and film festivals across Scotland. A zine featuring writing from Scotland-based writers and a special essay by archivist and programmer Rachel Pronger were comissioned to complement the programme.
The programme has been fully captioned for d/Deaf and hard of hearing audiences by Matchbox Cinesub.
